The Art
Of Being
Dangerous
For a while I had been working with the Institute for Advanced Studies in the Humanities at the University of Edinburgh to showcase my Women of Steel artworks as part of their Dangerous Women project, an online anthology of creative responses to the question: ‘what does it mean to be a dangerous woman?’ This has now culminated into a book, ‘The Art of Being Dangerous’, bringing to life all these fascinating and insightful works in print form.
I am slightly awed and incredibly honoured to be able to contribute my artwork and writing to this book. I have cared about women having the same rights as men for a long time and have often incorporated this concern into my art work. ‘Women of Steel’ was a particularly poignant series in this respect, portraying powerful, controversial women of colour in steel crocheted wall hangings, to give space to the women who influence and shape our worlds, even if not always in the best way. This includes people like Aung San Suy Kyi, Condoleezza Rice and Mayawati.
I’m fascinated to see where this project will go next and excited at continuing to be a part of it, thanks to the wonderful people at IASH.
“The Art of Being Dangerous” can be purchased on Amazon, Waterstones, Leuven University Press, and Cornell University Press.
