In 2020 at the height of the pandemic, my husband Alex used his ADHD superpower to hyperfocus and completed writing an entire childrens’ fantasy book. It was a beautiful though difficult time, and it made him realise that being an author was a life passion he could no longer put off. I could see how he was flourishing and saw this as the perfect moment for him to start building an online presence, so I offered to create his website pro bono. This was also a great opportunity for me to test out some different design approaches I was developing, in particular, style tiles.

Style tiles are a great way to put together the aesthetic of a website in short form, without having to actually build anything. You can include the banner, fonts, colour swatches, image styles, shapes and different heading styles. I wanted to see if these could be a good in-between step to get over some of the niggly conversations that can happen when translating an idea into reality. My experiment worked well and saved time doing repeated complex rebuilds and redesigns. We were able to have some straightforward conversations to iron out the complete aesthetic, which led to an easy build and finally, a website that Alex really liked.

What was also really nice about this project was working with a writer which meant all the copy was well put together and – most importantly – ready for the website build! This is something that many clients often underestimate and leave until the last minute. The text is absolutely crucial to a website and can make or break whether you hold a user’s attention. Sometimes there can be a symbiotic relationship between the design of a site and its copy, which can make it seem a bit chicken and egg. I would argue that knowing who you are, what you want to say, and what you want people to do when they come to your website is absolutely paramount, before any design work happens. That’s why I include these important questions in developing my website brief with clients, and I spend a fair bit of time getting this rounded off, alongside completing the copy, before any website development work begins.

So thank you husband Alex for being such a great client! May many more be like you in the future. But even if they are not, I have it all built into my design processes, phew!
