Of Light

Women of Light are a series of portraits focussing on powerful and influential Muslim women who despite being perceived as being subordinated and hidden by their faith, are open, independent and vocal public figures who are achieving great things.

The first subject in this series is Onjali Rauf, who is also a friend of the artist. Following the murder of Onjali’s aunt Mumtahina Jannat, she single handedly led the setup of the ground-breaking women’s rights charity Making Herstory and has gone on to author award winning children’s books centred around important social issues, including The Boy at the Back of the Class, The Star Outside My Window and The Night Bus Hero.

Women of Light #1 was longlisted for the BP Portrait Award 2016.
