Creating the
sci-fi world of
Detraxia

I am a lover of sci fi and fantasy in all its forms, as you will have gathered from my posts “I love (making) films!” and “My Foray into Cosplay”. So it was natural that I would be drawn to this subject matter in my artwork. I often go through periods, especially when I am relaxed, where incredibly vivid images come to me just as I am falling asleep, so that was where Detraxia started. I had also been watching a lot of artists on youtube and Instagram who make acrylic pour paintings, and was inspired to try out this technique in my work too. Below I take you through each painting step by step, with the accompanying story that I developed alongside each one.

Detraxia I

Welcome to Detraxia I, an inhabited planet recently discovered in the Aries constellation. Teegarden is its star, an M-Type red dwarf. What kind of beings could live here?

Detraxia II

Scientists decided to conduct a more thorough investigation of the newly discovered planet Detraxia. Whilst training their hyperscope on a particularly beautiful double-sunset, they came across an unusual sight in one of the valleys. A molten form arose from the nadir, quickly melding itself into amorphous shapes that seemed to be connected with the elaborate golden patterning of the landscape. What could it be?

Detraxia III

As the scientists looked more closely at the molten form on Detraxia’s horizon, a sudden explosion came from the figure, seemingly melding time and space together into a vortex. Land and sky became indistinguishable, veined through with a strange, elaborate golden chain made of light.

Detraxia IV

Startled by the figure’s inexplicable transformation, they hastily pulled back the hyperscope lest any ill effects may damage their delicate instrument. Drawing away just in time, they glimpsed the entire planet of Detraxia shroud itself in a kind of glimmering hexagonal armour, made of the same intricate golden chaining harboured in the land and sky.

Head scientist Dr Kramer felt the anxiety rising in her chest and slowly closing on her throat as she watched this unfold. Had they gone too far this time?
