My
Logo
It was exciting to focus my creative work on becoming a freelance designer and I knew one of the first important steps would be to create a strong logo. It needed to show what kind of designer I am – trustworthy, practical, organised, classic and impactful. I decided the best way to develop a logo that really met my needs, I would need to take myself through a logo design workshop that I had already used with clients. This proved helpful in two ways – not only did it help me to create a fit-for-purpose logo, it also allowed me to assess my own design processes and tools to check that they worked as well as they possibly could.
Given the kind of designer I want clients to think I am, my logo needed to be bold to make it impactful, have curves to give a sense of trustworthiness, and be constructed in simple elegant straight lines with serif to give a sense of timelessness, practicality and organisation. The colours needed to be neutral or muted to allow my portfolio work to really stand out, so a black and white pallett made the most sense to begin with. I explored a few logos that I admired, including that of the New York based design studio &Walsh, website builders Squarespace and even one of my favourite musicians, Aphex Twin. This was enough for me to go off-piste and start designing some options in Illustrator, my favourite part!
The final design I came up with combines my forename and surname initials bringing together everything I developed in my workshop. I’m really happy with the end result, the best thing about it is the ease of customisation into different colours and formats. I was also happy that I was able to tweak my design tools based on my experience of them as a client to myself.
