Helen’s House

Helen’s House

I had the pleasure of working on a lovely little collaboration recently which doubled up as a present from my colleague Justin to his partner Helen. Justin has a background as a producer so naturally it was great to work with him, because he knew exactly what he wanted. That didn’t mean I didn’t have any suggestions of my own of course!

Essentially what he wanted was a poster and a logo. But it meant a lot more than that. Previously Helen had put together a mixtape as a present for Justin, and created a framed poster with an accompanying image and playlist to go with it. So in return, Justin wanted to do something similar for Helen, and asked me to fashion an 80s neon poster in keeping with the theme of his mixtape. It’s so sweet it makes you want to burst, doesn’t it! Opposite is the finished piece and I was glad to find out they were very pleased with it. You can also see what the two posters look like side by side.

Creating the logo was a slightly different beast. Helen writes and illustrates children’s books, so as part of the present, Justin wanted me to create a logo which incorporated her unique visual style, as well as the new url he had purchased for her soon to be website. Once finished, he would get it printed onto a hoodie which would be how he would present this element of the gift. This was great fun, as I took one of Helen’s cute drawings of a house and turned it into a vector. I tried hard to preserve the texture and character of the original drawing using various tools in illustrator. Justin had a great idea about what kind of font he wanted, and I managed to find one that encapsulated his vision perfectly.

I only wish I could have been there to see Helen’s reaction when Justin presented the final pieces to her. What a golden moment! Next as part of our collaboration, I will be working with both Justin and Helen on creating the website for Helen’s House. Watch this space!
